This incident led to a two-hour suspension of flight activities.

Crowds also flooded surrounding thoroughfares and tried to enter parliament, where the government had initially planned the open visitation.

National Legacy and Community Support

Though mainly known as an government critic, Odinga became head of government in 2008 and also formed a political pact with Ruto last year in a public service marked by changing partnerships.

He commanded strong loyalty among followers, notably in his ethnic group based in the country's west, many of whom believe he was prevented from obtaining the highest office by vote manipulation.

Many of Odinga's supporters, who were not yet born in 1991 when Kenya became a pluralistic political system, offered homage to Odinga's work as an activist.
