Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
