No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
