From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.
Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.
The Warrior Group Introduced
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the premier party of heroes who will separate from the central cast to embark on their independent quest, apart from the other two tables.
The combat-focused team includes Teor (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.
Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Planners, and Questers.
The Nature of the Soldiers Table
Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.
At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might appear unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the combat party.
Why They Must Go
To begin with, the team understands precisely where to proceed after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.
An old friend of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into the secret base, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to auction.
Casimir then settled his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.
Personal Motivations
Additionally, each adventurer has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:
- Thimble, as the companion and trusted friend, wants vengeance.
- The adventurer is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous place.
- The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
- Yet, their status as key figures in House Halovar could help the group access locations they normally couldn’t.
- Additionally, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his rescue and will now follow him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that control the setting for a range of causes, making staying in the city no longer safe:
- Thimble and The character are known criminals.
- Tyranny and Wicander turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
- The target is wanted dead by the family.
This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in quest for the traitor.
Future Episodes
Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Seekers and Strategists tables.
